Moroccan Museum to Showcase Extensive Collection of African Contemporary Art

Starting in February 2025, the Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (Macaal) in Marrakech will permanently exhibit 150 works from the Lazraq family’s extensive 2,500-piece collection. The collection spans various mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography, and video, representing artists from across the African continent. Artistic director Meriem Berrada aims to challenge stereotypes and highlight the diversity of African creative expression. The museum’s renovation includes eight exhibition spaces featuring notable works by artists such as Farid Belkahia, Ahmed Cherkaoui, and Malick Sidibé. Macaal also emphasizes accessibility, offering cultural bootcamps, community events, and outreach programs to democratize access to contemporary art in Morocco.
